Overview
When crude temperature falls, wax crystals can grow and interlock, causing viscosity increase and eventually loss of flow. Pour point depressants are designed to alter crystal structure so the fluid stays mobile at lower temperature.
These treatments are especially relevant for waxy crudes moved through cooler environments, long transfer lines, or storage systems with temperature swings.
Selection note: A lower pour point does not always mean lower deposition risk, so pour-point depressants are often evaluated alongside broader wax-control objectives.
Typical Applications
- Pipeline transport of waxy crudes with tight restart margins
- Tankage and transfer systems exposed to overnight cooling
- Blending programs targeting lower handling temperature
- Logistics where improved pumpability reduces heating demand
Operational Considerations
- Performance depends on crude composition and should be verified on representative samples.
- Treatment can improve transportability, but deposition risk still needs to be assessed separately.
- Operational success should be measured against restart performance, viscosity behavior, and field temperature profile.
